Introduction to Scouting Day — September 27, 2008

The group reviewed the Introduction to Scouting Day. Four troops attended of which one camped out. Twenty-four participants rotated between the sessions. Eight sessions were run: axe and saw, knife, stove and lantern, fire, first aid, map and compass, knots, and no trace camping and packing. Discussed timing of sessions, as some needed additional time to run: e.g. stove and lantern. This item will be considered next year when the planning of this event is done. Conclusion was that it was a successful day.

Review of CEC Camporee — October 3–5, 2008

The group discussed the Central Escarpment Council Camporee. 11th Kitchener had attended. Approximately 400 were in attendance of which 300 were from Scouts and 70 were from Venturers. It was a large event that gave the Scouts the perspective that Scouts, as an organization was quite large. Lots of events. Everyone had a good time.

Fall Hike — October 25, 2008

The Fall Hike will be at Mount Nemo. Elmira, Freeport, 9th Waterloo, 14th Waterloo & 11th Kitchener have announces their intention to attend so far. Potluck Saturday night. Ted has booked the lower gate site. Hike is to top of Mt. Nemo for lunch and exploring. Meet at 9:30 sharp at Scout Camp Nemo. Bring your own lunch. Contact Ted Claxton if you are attending or have any questions.

Patrol Leadership Workshop — November 14–16, 2008

Liam is ordering the new BSA training video/kit to use at this year's camp. He will be previewing it to plan this year's activities. Currently the Club is looking for a location to hold the camp. Those being considered are: Ridley Lodge at Blue Springs, Camp Heidelberg (Daniel Sheppard to contact the Optimists), Camp Manitou, Camp Barber. Scouts may need to sleep in tents. Not all locations have both sleeping and class room facilities. Classroom facilities are more important. Scouter Liam will contact the others and will make a decision based on cost, suitability, facilities, etc.

Owen Sound Winter Camp — January 30 to February 1, 2009

The group discussed renting a bus to transport troops to Owen Sound as suggested by Daniel. Daniel will contact bus company and provide Club with cost estimates for the next meeting. Do we want to camp together? Discussed whether or not the Club wanted to camp as a contingent this year. Pros were that it would allow the leaders to meet and eat together in one area away from the youth. We discuss this further at our next meeting.

Winter Hike — Saturday, February 21, 2009

We discussed various local hikes we could do. Plan is for the hike to last approximately six hours. We will determine the hiking trail at our next meeting.

75th Anniversary Camporee — May 29–31, 2009

Scouter Ted attended the planning meeting. The Club needs to organize the Scout Camporee portion of the event, i.e. the Saturday events, etc., that the Club wants to run for the Scouts attending the camp (this is similar to what we do already for the Camporee). We will plan out the events at the next meeting.

Maintaining and Promoting the NW Scouters' Club

The group had a Pentagon-style discussion on how to better market the Club to North Waterloo Scouters. This discussion came out of the agenda item dealing with callers for the meetings. While a lot of members have email, there is better meeting turnout when there is a call-around first. We need to do a telemarketing-type campaign to call everyone on the phone list to remind them about the Club, the reasons for its existence, and the activities are provided. This would be likened to a selling day for the club or a recruitment drive. The Club would organize a phone blitz where Club members would call all the local Scouters. Scouter Ted will contact Tony Skells regarding the phone blitz.

All Scouters are urged to check the Club Directory to ensure it is up to date. Please refer to his email on how to access the listing through the Web.

Power Boating

Daniel Sheppard knows someone who can provide the Ministry Power Boating course over four Troop meetings. The will earn their license and the Scout boating badge. Daniel will see of he can attend a Club meeting to briefly explain his program too us.

Adjournment

The next meetings will be Tuesday, January 6, 2009, Wednesday, March 4, and Thursday, May 7, all at 19:00 at North Waterloo Scout House.
