The NW Scouters' Club is a co-operative of Scout Troops. Representatives of member Scout Troops gather to share ideas and experience, plan joint activities, and pursue other projects of mutual benefit.
Ted is off to ScotiaJam this summer and will not be able to organize the Everton Summer Camp as he has done in the past. The camp averages fifteen youth over the past few years. Need a new organizer. Ted can assist. Al Horner and John McCuish assisted in the past. Ann MacDonald has retired as food organizer. Please contact Ted if you wish to organize this summers camp.
Many Troops attend Haliburton Scout Reserve and can take additional youth and leaders along to fill up the large sites. If you have additional space or are looking to link up with a Troop please bring up at our meetings.
Liam pointed out that the important thing is that troops have summer camps, not that any particular campsite, such as Everton, is used to hold a summer camp.
It would appear that 9th Waterloo is the only North Waterloo troop going.
It would appear that 1st Lexington is the only local group going. 1st Elmira is taking a trip to the UK plus and will have a day visit to the WJ'07.
Everton Scout Summer Camp, July 21-27, 2007. Scouter Ted urged that there be club participation in the planning. The fee this year will be set at $250.
Who will be going to Haliburton? 11th Kitchener is planning split Haliburton/Algonquin Park-Baden Powell Lake expedition for mid-August.
1st Lexington and 1st Elmira have members going to the World Jamboree. 9th Waterloo is going to the Canadian Jamboree.

Scouter Ted will be in camp along with John McCuish and Anne Macdonald. Scouters should arrange to come to camp with a patrol. The theme this year will be Railway. The program will include a trip either to the steam train in Tottenham or to the Halton County Radial Railway museum and perhaps the Aberfoyle Junction Model Railroad. The camp fee will be $250.
The 1st Freeport will be going to HSR July 22-29. Speak to Jamie Leggot or Cindy Elliot if you would like to join them. 9th Waterloo and 11th Kitchener are considering attendance. 4th Waterloo may also be going in August.
Wayne Hessel will be involved with the Great Lakes Jamboree at Camp BEL near London July 8-16. This has BSA and Scouts Canada participation. Camp fee is $185, not including food and transportation to the site.
Ted has been involved with the Everton Summer Camp for 12 years. Ted described the current situation with the Everton Summer Camp. The camp used to be run by North Waterloo District. With the restructuring, Ted has been left with whole responsibility. This creates a single point of failure and doesn't sufficiently involve Scouters in planning their troop's summer program. Ted would like to see the Everton Summer Camp evolve into a larger program with more people involved, particularly the Club. The advantage of the Everton Summer Camp is that its program and quartermaster arrangements are more structured, thereby requiring less planning on the part of the individual troops. Ted would like to discuss theme and program matters at the next meeting to get things rolling for the 2006 season.
Nine troops from North Waterloo including 65 Scouts and 25 Scouters will be attending CCJam at Tamaracouta Scout Reserve in Quebec in July. Scouters appreciated the work of Tony Skells who helped organize this trip.
4th Waterloo Scouts are planning to camp at Hidden Bay at HSR August 6-13, 2005. They will have 15-17 Scouts and have room for about 10 more. HSR charges $115 per person. The 4th Waterloo's fee will be about $225. Please make arrangements with 4th Waterloo by mid-April. 21st Waterloo will be going August 13-20. They do not have extra room on their site, but Scouter Liam is happy to give advice to anyone who is planning their troop's summer camp.
Summer camp will run at Everton Saturday, July 23 to Friday, July 29. The plan this year is to have four patrols totalling 24-30 Scouts. The week will have a voyager theme. Activities will include hiking , trail work, map work, community service project, swimming, and camp craft for each day. The cost is $230 per Scout, all-inclusive.
David Wilson attended to discuss summer camp at Everton Scout Camp. David is in charge of the Cub program there and said that it is important for each section to have its own Scouter in charge. The Scout program will run July 24-30, coinciding with the ACE Cub Camp. Swimming needs a more imaginative program, such as games and contests.
HSR is a fantastic place to hold a summer camp. HSR staff run a series of activities with which to build your program. The camp 2000 hectare camp is canoe-focused (canoes, etc. supplied). A summer camp at HSR costs about $200 per person. 4th Waterloo may be going to HSR August 6-13. 21st Waterloo will go August 13-20. The HSR camp will be discussed more at the next meeting.
Scouter Mark Carruthers and Lloyd Daigle of the 4th Waterloo are going to HSR August 7-14. Scouters are invited to contact them to see whether they have room on their site. Their fee will be in the order of $225.
Ted Claxton informed the group that the NW Composite Camp will be functioning again this year. A discussion was had about themes. The meeting decided on an African theme. The day-out will consist of a visit to the African Lion Safari and Webster's Falls. The hiking section this year will be feature a hike from Georgetown to Blue Springs to Everton. The fee for the week of camp will be $225. There is room for 24 Scouts in the camping section and 6 in the hiking section. Ted encourages Scouters and Scouts to come to camp as patrols. The Camp needs some new leadership and all are invited to be part of this experience.
Scouter Brian Robertson was waylaid by vehicle problems and unable to attend the meeting. Brian is coordinating a Haliburton Experience to be held August 7-14 at a cost of $300 per person. This camp is run on a composite basis with the assistance of volunteer leadership.
[There will also be a Scouters' Club camp at HSR August 21-28 for $200 per person, all inclusive. Please see the Club web site or contact Scouter Liam Morland for more information.]
Scouter Brian Robertson reported that they and John Getgood have placed a deposit on Doe Island campsite at Haliburton Scout Reserve for August 7-14. They project the cost of the camp to be $300 per person. [Others have proposed a budget of $200 per person.]

Ben described the 17th Cambridge summer camp at Haliburton Scout Reserve last summer. HSR is a huge Scout camp where troops can go for summer camps. Troops run their own programs which can draw on programs provided by HSR staff. Often, troops team up for camps at HSR. Lloyd said that the 4th Waterloo will be on Hidden Bay campsite at HSR July 27 to August 3, 2002 and invited others to join them. HSR charges $115 per person for the week for the site. Additional costs for food, gas, a crest etc. would run about $85, so the camp will cost in total $200 per person. NWD is also running a camp at HSR August 3-10. Cost is $250 per person. See NWD's Scouting News, January/March 2002 for more details. Some sites are still available for booking the week of August 17-24.
Brian and Liam talked briefly about Haliburton Scout Reserve (HSR). A short video of the camp was shown.
The 4th & 17th Waterloo and 1st Waterloo will be camping at HSR on August 4-11, 2001. Brian has booked Bedford Park site the same week and would like to give that booking to any troop that can use it. Please contact Brian as soon as possible if interested.
The 16th, 18th, & 20th Waterloo will be on Big Bear Point on August 18-25. Several other sites are available that week. The 31st Kitchener and 17th Cambridge are interested in this date. Liam offered to help troops plan their camp. Any troops interested or who would like more information should contact Liam as soon as possible.
Liam described the opportunities for a summer camp at the Haliburton Scout Reserve (HSR). HSR is a wilderness area of more than 5000 acres almost touching the South-West corner of Algonquin Park. The main camp is situated around Kennabi Lake. On its shores are nearly two-dozen campsites accessible only by water and a bunch of activities areas for sailing, kayaking, rappelling, archery, riflery, survival, snorkelling, and more. Away from the main lake, hiking trails wind there way through forests and marshlands, over rocky areas, and past quiet lakes, each with its own campsite for overnights. Troops come to the reserve for week-long camps (Saturday to Saturday). Troops book a site and time slots for HSR-run activities. The rest of the program is up to the troop. A regatta is held every Thursday afternoon and a closing campfire is held on Friday. The HSR Medical Centre is staffed with nurses and a doctor. A grocery store and trading post are on site. Every campsite has a swimming area and an intercom phone for emergencies.
HSR charges $105 per person for the week. This includes all programs costs but the bullets at the rifle range. Including food, one can easily run a camp for less than $200 per person.
Liam suggested that troops interested in having a summer camp consider getting together for a camp at HSR. Liam's troop will be going, probably August 18-25, 2001, and will likely have space for a few patrols to join them. A composite camp, where individual Scouts sign up to participate, is not what is being suggested here. This is an opportunity for a troop, including its Scouters, to have its own summer camp. By having several troops camp together, a shortage of experience or of Scouters will not be a problem. Scouters desiring more information about HSR or whose troops are interested in attending should contact Liam.
